Commercials |
| This is some of the commercials work that I've done. Working on commercials is generally viewed as being less glamorous, less exciting and less rewarding than working on motion pictures. Well, I've certainly found all of that to be true, for me at least. Having said that, commercials isn't bad work, and on the plus side each job lasts for only a few weeks and then it's on to something new (whereas a movie can last for eighteen months). |

Dodge: Reflections. This is one of a linked series of three commercials under the umbrella title of Dodge: Truckville. I was the CG Supervisor for all three of these spots. The truck in the image to the left is not real, it's CG. In fact the truck is quite often not real throughout all three of these spots. Take a closer look if you like... Dodge: Baggage Claim. Again from the Dodge: Truckville series of commercials. All three spots were filmed out in the middle of vast, empty, featureless salt flats, so if you see anything in them that you wouldn't quite expect to find in the middle of a salt flat... well, we probably did that. This is from an American Express commercial. It's one of a long series of spots in similar style for their latest, high tech card that has a computer chip built into it. I made the robot... model, textures... everything. If you'd like to see the whole commercial as a DivX movie then click here. Click on the image to see a full size version. |

This one is for a Pontiac spot set in a city that's made entirely from metal, the idea being to emphasise how "tough" the car is. I worked on the buildings used throughout the spot. A Gatorade spot. For this I textured the heads for the characters, modeled and textured the foosball table and the giant robots, and lit and rendered several of the shots. All of the character animation was done in Maya then exported to Lightwave for texturing, lighting and rendering. If you'd like to see the whole commercial as a DivX movie then click here. Husqvarna: Tornado. I created the tornado for the two close-up shots in this commercial. It's a little hard to break down further than that because it doesn't format into the normal "Modeled this, painted that, animated this..." way of describing the process. Regardless, I made the tornado. It was one of those jobs where weeks pass by with nobody having any idea how to do the hero shots and then with four days left until delivery I stepped in and worked out how to do what you see here. If you'd like to see the two shots as a Quicktime movie then click here. |

This is one of two spots that I did (from a set of four) for Capital One credit cards. For my sins I actually got to do a little of everything on this! I wasn't stuck just building all the models or doing last minute rescue work. A pity it's not a bit more exciting but then I suppose not every job can be... I was also one of the CG Supervisors for this set of spots. If you'd like to see the whole commercial as a DivX movie then click here. |

Brobeck: Glider. I was the CG Supervisor for this spot. In addition I modelled, textured, surfaced, lit and rendered the glider and the flower. I also did some work on the matte painting of the sky. The icy ground was done with Houdini and Renderman. If you'd like to see the whole commercial as a Divx movie then click here. |

Brobeck: Train. Again, as with the previous Brobeck spot my main function for this one was as the CG Supervisor for the art team, taking in Houdini, Renderman and Lightwave artists and matte painters. In addition I also textured and lit the train. |

Clarus. The Clarus people were already using a transparent, X-Ray like set of images in their publicity and so this commercial followed that lead. I built and surfaced the entire building, through the office floors and out into the large atrium. At the VFX Supervisor's insistence there are paper clips in the desk drawers, posters on the walls and in the atrium there are waterfalls, elevators, escalators, a coffee bar... In the end the camera move was so rapid that none of the detail registers as more than a blur. Hey ho. I didn't build the people models, just everything else. This was the first spot on which I was referred to as 'The CG Production designer'. If you'd like to see the whole commercial as a DivX movie then click here. |
